Free Resource from BSCS: Allergies and Scientific Inquiry

by , posted on 9:49 AM, May 11, 2017
BSCS is pleased to announce the availability of a digital resource aimed at helping middle school students learn important concepts related to food allergies and scientific inquiry.

The five lessons are designed to be completed in approximately seven class periods and employ a scenario approach where students assume the role of medical students rotating through an allergy clinic as part of their training:
  • Lesson 1: What Is a Food Allergy?
  • Lesson 2: How Can You Tell if Someone Has a Food Allergy?
  • Lesson 3: What Causes the Symptoms of Food Allergy?
  • Lesson 4: How Are Food Allergies Managed?
  • Lesson 5: Creating an Action Plan for Managing a Food Allergy
The ASI website includes assets to help teachers effectively implement the student lessons. Each lesson includes an instructor guide available only to teachers. The instructor guides list the major concepts and objectives for the lesson and include answer keys for student work. Student handouts are available as PDFs. Annotations linked to procedural steps reflect lessons learned through a nationwide field test and efficacy study of the instructional materials. Videos shot in an authentic classroom setting allow teachers to see how classroom discussions can help scaffold student learning.

The ASI materials are available free of charge. Teachers have the option of registering their classes to track student responses and compare them to responses from all students using the lessons.

Sincerely,
