The theme for this workshop is Drawing on Traditional Knowledge to Enhance Classroom Teaching about Water.

Who: Teachers, Outreach Program Educators, and Ojibwe Knowledge Keepers from Minnesota and Wisconsin, including:
- Mentor educators: Experienced with Great Lakes shipboard science, literacy, and/or traditional ecological knowledge
- Mentee educators: Ready, willing, and eager to learn and implement the above
When: The workshop begins on Monday, August 5 and ends on Monday, August 12.
Where: Participants will convene in Duluth, Minnesota board a bus, travel to St. Ignace, Michigan, and sail across Lake Superior to Duluth, arriving just in time for the Parade of Tall Ships to sail under the famous Duluth lift bridge.

More workshop details:
- Learn about Great Lake tribal approaches to natural resource management and research incorporating Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Ojibwe Cultural Relationships to Water, and Western Science
- Gain understanding about Tribal Treaty Rights, history of tribes along the Great Lakes, and co-management efforts along Lake Superior and Lake Michigan
- Learn about the importance of Ojibwe cultural relationships to the ecology of aquatic species, land, water, and air
- Gain an understanding of Great Lakes ecology and water quality and get hands-on experience monitoring water quality and biota
- Leave with exemplary curricula and resources
- Become part of a community of Great Lakes educators, outreach professionals, scientists, and others focused on increasing Great Lakes and traditional knowledge literacy
- Receive ongoing communication and support from Sea Grant and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College education/outreach specialists
- Become eligible for small grants and monitoring equipment loans to implement what you’ve learned in your own teaching
- Help sail a replica 19th Century wooden schooner
Logistics:
- Housing and meals provided aboard the S/V Denis Sullivan; additional stipend provided to cover miscellaneous travel expenses
- Sixty contact hours in science education
- Two graduate credit hours available ($360 paid by participant)
About the S/V Denis Sullivan: The S/V Denis Sullivan is the world’s only re-creation of a 19th century three-masted Great Lakes schooner, providing a very unique glimpse into the rich maritime history on our freshwater seas. Participants will be expected to work alongside professional crew members on periodic 4-5 hour assigned watches and participate in every component of the voyage, including: raising and lowering sails, dropping and pulling up the anchor, sweeping and mopping, and cleaning the heads (bathrooms). Participants will sleep in co-ed sleeping quarters and will need to climb and descend stairs with a 60 degree incline.
