Summer Reading Meets Citizen Science

Registration is now open for a free summer series called "Summer Reading Meets Citizen Science," presented by SciStarter and the Network of the National Library of Medicine. This fun and engaging series features a dozen scientists who will help you learn how to get involved in their important, real-world research projects in real-time! This series is designed to keep students and adults engaged with reading and research to prevent “summer slide” learning loss.

If you can't make the online events, no worries! You'll find recordings of them and many other awesome events on SciStarter.org/Citizen- Science-Videos.

And here's one for the kids, teachers, and all you parents and guardians who may be looking for real-world science engagement programs this fall. Whether you're heading back to school virtually, in-person, or some combination of the two, make use of the Educators' Picks on SciStarter, featuring more than a dozen citizen science projects indexed by grade-level on the SciStarter Education page. Projects include QuestaGame, a free app to engage in a friendly, global competition to document and study the world's plants and animals!

Lastly, here's a handful of projects we think you'll love. Remember, when you get involved with projects on SciStarter (some only take a few minutes), you help advance important areas of scientific research. Thank you!

  • FISHstory: Count and identify fish online in historic photos to help fill fishery data gaps.
  • GLOBE Observer: This free app from NASA makes it easy for you to groundtruth NASA satellite data!
  • The Great Sunflower Project:  Help scientists learn where pollinators are..and aren't...simply by taking a close look at outdoor plants for as little as 5 minutes and sharing your observations online. Check out a printable coloring sheet to help you identify different pollinators.

SciStarter features thousands of projects and events in need of your help. The SciStarter Project Finder makes it easy for you to find one that matches your interest, location, skills and availability.
