Job Description / Duties

The Operations and Education Lead is responsible for facilitating educational experiences centered on environmental science, natural history, and agriculture for children entering 2nd - 6th grade during the Bell Museum’s Grand Rapids 2022 summer camp pilot program. Working with other camp staff, Lead Educators create a safe, engaging, age-appropriate and positive learning environment for campers while working with other summer camp staff and NCROC researchers. This camp is a collaborative effort between the Bell Museum and the North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) and is located in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, with some required training to take place in St Paul, Minnesota.

About NCROC: The North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) is dedicated to the discovery and sharing of knowledge to improve the quality of life for Minnesotans. The unique soil, climate, and social and economic environment in north central Minnesota provide opportunities for researchers to conduct research and lead outreach programs that contribute to sustainable economic systems in the region.


Duties and Responsibilities
Camp Facilitation and Instruction (70%)
● Attend camp training in June and July.
● Implement engaging four-day, week-long camps for up to 25 children per class using a provided curriculum that includes scientific experiments and interactive activities involving earth science, agriculture, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, art, games, and more. This includes working outdoors.
● Follow safety guidelines and practices to ensure that campers are safe at all times with on-going supervision. Includes following prevailing University of Minnesota COVID-19 safety policies.
● Develop a personal teaching style to accommodate camper learning style(s).
● Provide direction to and work collaboratively with Camp Assistants and Safety Lead.
● Interact with campers, guardians, other staff, and the general public in a safe, respectful, and professional manner.

Camp Prep and Administrative Tasks (20%)
● Regular check-ins with Safety Lead and Statewide School & Community Engagement Coordinator
● Manage set up, take down and cleaning of camp activities, and maintaining classroom facilities.
● Conduct regular reflections/evaluations of the program and experiences.
● Travel to the Bell Museum for in-person training in June (paid travel and training hours, plus mileage, accommodations, and per diem covered by Bell Museum )

Other duties as assigned (10%)
● Complete other additional tasks as assigned by Statewide School & Community Engagement Coordinator

Qualifications / Required Skills

Essential Qualifications
● Minimum High School Diploma or G.E.D required
● Experience working with youth and adults in a team environment.
● Must be dedicated, dependable, flexible, and enthusiastic about working with youth.
● Experience or relevant coursework in youth education, physical or natural science, or agriculture.
● Experience working with persons from diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
● Must be 18 years of age or older.

Desired Qualifications
● Training or experience working in camps as a summer camp leader.
● Demonstrated understanding of basic science concepts, including agricultural, and natural sciences.
● Experience in working with youth with cognitive, physical or other disabilities or diagnoses.
● CPR and First Aid certified.

Additional Information

Hours, Pay, Other

● Position start date: June 1, 2022

● Position end date: July 29, 2022

● Hours:

30 - 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, during two weeks of camp beginning July 18th and ending July 29th.
Nine training days between the dates June 1st and July 18th.
● Required staff training days:

○ 5-6 days of training:

5 days in St Paul at the Bell Museum between June 3 - 10 (dates to be finalized)
4 days in Grand Rapids at NCROC between July 11 - 15
● Pay rate: $18.50/hr

● Location: North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) Grand Rapids, Mn

Salary: 18.50/hour
