Minnesota Youth Institute opportunity for high school students
The University of Minnesota invites you to share an opportunity for high school students who are curious about global challenges related to food, agriculture, sustainability, and human well-being.
The Minnesota Youth Institute (MNYI) is a research-based program in which students write a paper on a global food or agricultural issue and then participate in a one-day academic experience on the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus.
Why students participate:
- Develop research, writing, and presentation skills
- Explore real-world global challenges and solutions
- Engage with University of Minnesota faculty & students, local experts, and peers
- Earn a $1,000 scholarship to the UMN College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS)
Who it’s for:
- Students in grades 9 - 12
- Motivated learners interested in global issues, science, agriculture, food systems, or sustainability
Key dates for 2026:
- Student registration deadline: March 27, 2026
- Paper submission deadline: April 3, 2026
- MNYI event (St. Paul campus): May 14, 2026
The research paper can be integrated into an existing class or completed independently, and clear guidelines and support materials are provided. This includes a new AI Use Policy.
We appreciate your help sharing this opportunity with students who may be a good fit. Additional details and registration information are available on the MNYI website.
