KITP physics teachers' conference, February 17, 2018

A bar magnet, a glass of water sitting on a desk, and a cylinder of helium all have something in common: they are systems in equilibrium. But with equilibrium comes another strange trait: “amnesia.” Once equilibrium is achieved, the past information of the system—its memory—can no longer be recovered! Luckily, we live in a universe full of systems far from equilibrium.

This year, the annual Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) Teachers' Conference will look at things as ubiquitous as electronic memory storage, and as vast as the Universe post-Big Bang, to explore how matter “remembers” its past by falling out of balance.

“Matter of Memory” will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at KITP, University of California, Santa Barbara. Join Prof. Sidney Nagel (University of Chicago) and physics educators from around the country for a look into the cutting-edge future of how we are learning about the past. A description, list of confirmed speakers, and logistical information is at https://www.kitp.ucsb.edu/activities/memformt-c18.

Registration is free, open, and includes a Friday evening reception at the conference hotel (Best Western South Coast Inn, 5620 Calle Real, Goleta CA), Saturday morning breakfast at the hotel, and Saturday lunch at KITP. Register by January 16.

Generous support for travel and lodging expenses is available for current teachers. Awards are issued on a rolling basis. Apply early.

Contact Claudia Gutierrez (kitpconf@kitp.ucsb.edu) if you have questions.

We look forward to seeing you in Santa Barbara!
