Educational Testing Service (ETS) is seeking graduate students in science education, science teachers from elementary or middle schools, science teacher educators, and professional development facilitators to work with research and test development staff in a project related to elementary science instruction. The project is focused on developing and validating a set of assessments designed to measure and build elementary science teachers’ content knowledge for teaching (CKT) in one content area: matter and its interactions. These CKT matter assessments will be integrated into teacher education courses to better understand the nature of elementary science teachers’ CKT in this area. A short description of this NSF project can be found at: https://nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1813254&HistoricalAwards=false

Responsibilities include:

  • Training on the overall project goals and on the process for developing CKT matter assessment tasks
  • Locating and sharing resources to support the development of CKT matter assessment tasks
  • Developing item specifications and CKT matter assessment tasks and revising based on feedback
  • Attending and participating in regularly scheduled team meetings to review and provide feedback on CKT matter assessment tasks

Physical science content expertise related to matter and its interactions is required. Previous experience with and familiarity with the Next Generation Science Standards as well as knowledge and/or experience teaching elementary science is preferred.

The work will run for approximately 10 months, beginning in September 2018 and ending around June 2019. Work will take place remotely, but participants will be expected to produce specific deliverables based on the project timeline and will be paid based on the time committed to each deliverable. In total, approximately 150 to 250 hours over the course of the 10 month period will be required. Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Findings will be made available upon completion of the study.
