PLT Climate Change Workshop & Field Tour for Grade 7-12 Teachers

Description:

Designed for grade 7-12 teachers, this workshop introduces the new Project Learning Tree (PLT) secondary module on forests and climate change. Module covers lessons on the history of climate science, how climate change affects our forests and ecosystems, how people are working to manage and adapt forests, carbon sequestration, assessing life cycles of forest products, and creating solutions for change. Engaging, hands-on PLT activities use trees and natural resources to engage students in science, math, English language arts, and social studies. Some activities may be outdoors, so dress for the weather. Cost: $20 Participants get the PLT SE Forests and Climate Change secondary module, lunch, and 4.5 CEUs.

Featured speaker: This workshop will include a field tour lead by University of Minnesota Ph.D. candidate, Jake Grossman. Jake is one of the U?s first graduate students to work in the Forests and Biodiversity experiment. He has a background in forestry, specifically in changing environments around the world. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, he worked on topics such as sustainable farming and forestry, soil conservation, and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Field tour: The Grassland and Forest Biodiversity Experiments examine how and why changes in species, functions, and diversity of plants affect food web structure and communities and ecosystem dynamics and functioning.
