MnSTA-hosted workshop: Nanotechnology

For elementary, middle and high school teachers

Tuesday – April 4, 2017 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Where?

Bemidji State University Bensen Hall room 404

Free Professional Development Opportunity

Facilitators: Deb Newberry & Billie Copley (Nano-Link)

Nano-Link: Center for Nanotechnology Education is funded by the National Science Foundation. One of the goals of Nano-Link is to provide educators with nanoscience content that can be easily integrated into the traditional classes that they teach. Nano-Link believes that educators, armed with fun activities and good background can ignite interest and excitement in students – not only for nanoscience but for STEM and science careers in general. Therefore Nano-Link provides materials and content to educators at no cost (free).

During these workshops educators learn about nanotechnology, the fundamental concepts AND get to practice 8 to 10 of our topic specific activities. Educators leave the workshops with information and ideas – and confidence to bring this emerging technology content to their students.

Working Lunch: a free lunch will also be provided to attendees.

Below is a list of the topics usually covered in a typical workshop:

  • Introductions and Logistics
  • Nanotechnology Overview
  • A Glance at Forces and Interactions
  • Cross Link Polymer Activity –Part I
  • Discussion – what’s going on with those polymers and water
  • Cross Link Polymers Activity – Part II – different liquids, variations and considerations
  • Major concepts and correlation to traditional science concepts
  • DCTC Nano Programs and Courses -- Nano-Link Modular Approach- Resources
  • Critical Thinking
  • Back to Polymers – the ring structure and interaction with liquids
  • Models and Simulations – Overt and Covert Assumptions Thin films and diffraction
  • Cohesive and Adhesive Forces –Superhydrophobicity - Examples from Nature
  • Superhydrophobic Activity
  • Aspirin Calculation – practice with numbers, conversions – hyper vs reality
  • SA and chemical reactivity – discussion/activity
  • Applications of Nanotechnology
  • Crystal Structure – Discussion
  • Quantum Physics and Quantum Dots
  • Biologicals nano particles
  • Scientific method activity
  • Fluids – Discussion and activity

A certificate of completion is provided for documenting clock hours (~6 hours).
