SUMMARY:- Minnesota Sea Grant Shipboard Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Sea Grant is hosting a shipboard science workshop
October 18-19, 2022. This workshop is for 4th-12th grade teachers and e
ducators who want to know about the invisible microbes that live in our
gut, that drive our food webs, that cycle nutrients like phosphorus or n
itrogen in the environment, and that live in zooplankton and help them p
rocess food. Spend a day aboard the Research Vessel (R/V) Blue Heron wo
rking with University of Minnesota Duluth Associate Professor and microb
iologist Cody Sheik and a day in his laboratory analyzing the water sam
ples you collected. Participants will learn how to collect samples of
microorganisms from lake water and lake sediment and how to cultivate mi
crobes from water samples. Participants will also learn how to quantify
nitrogen fixation, a process that maintains the inventory of biologicall
y available nitrogen in the lake, which fuels plant growth. Contact Mart
e Kitson for more information at minnesota@cgll.education or 218-726-830
