Big River Journey Online!

by , posted on 7:43 AM, April 30, 2020
Each school year over 4,000 third through fifth grade students join Mississippi National River and Recreation Rangers and other partner staff aboard a Mississippi River paddleboat to explore and learn about the Mississippi River. Due to COVID-19, the journey has been moved online.

Big River Journey Online!

Since its beginning in 1996, the award-winning Big River Journey program has connected over 65,000 students to the science and heritage of the Mississippi River and its watershed.

While this year’s trips have been cancelled due to Covid-19, we are excited to launch Big River Journey Online! This partnership with the National Park Service and the Mississippi Park Connection now allows students from anywhere to join the journey online for free! The program makes extensive use of CGEE’s acclaimed Waters to the Sea® online learning program.

The Big River Journey Online experience will enable students to:

  • peer into the tiny world of aquatic invertebrates; investigate a ‘river crime’ spree and learn how to reduce runoff pollution;
  • play fun learning games and dive into engaging interactives;
  • get a captain’s view of the river from the pilothouse;
  • explore dozens of videos, 360-landscape panoramas, and more!

Each of these interactive learning stations allows students to connect with the river remotely and have fun exploring science, art, history, and culture. Teachers will also find built-in assessments and connections to standards to easily integrate into lesson plans.

All Aboard!
