What is PIE?

Partners In Education (PIE) is a collaboration between MN Sea Grant, UMD's Center for Environmental Education and Great Lakes Aquarium. PIE recruits college student volunteers and trains them to teach free, interactive lessons on topics related to the Great Lakes to grade school-aged students. Due to the continuing COVID-19 protocols we are offering the Great Lakes curriculum virtually or in person.

New this spring: “Lake Superior Rocks!”

The goal of this lesson is to identify the geological events that contributed to the formation of Lake Superior. Students will

  • Participate in “Geo-Theater,” acting out the geological progression of the great lake,
  • Observe and classify the types of rocks that reside in the Lake Superior basin, and
  • Practice the methods that geologists use to date and construct timelines for the changing in land over thousands of years.

Our lessons are targeted to run approximately 30-45 minutes and will offer ways to directly engage with your learners. Our target audience is grades 3-5, but we can adapt our lesson to serve the needs of learners above and below that age range.

How do I host a lesson?

  • PIE lesson scheduling will begin mid February and run through April 29th.
  • Virtual lessons available via Zoom.
  • Twin Ports area educators may elect in-person lessons.
