What is Climate? (Grades 3 - 5)

What is climate and how is it different from weather? This video is an ideal discussion starter for learners eager to understand the long term effects of climate change. After viewing the video, have students read the leveled readers to help reinforce the difference between weather and climate. Use the Think, Pair, Share strategy to help students gain a strong understanding of the difference between the two concepts.

Climate Change Adaptation & Mitigation (Grades 6 - 12)

Shorter ice cover on lakes, longer summers and more frequent heat waves impact our communities and culture. You can help students understand the impact, and why we need to explore solutions now.  Here is a project idea to help students visualize climate change: create a Venn diagram to compare weather and climate, based on the video’s content.

Working Together With Elinor Wonders Why (Grades Pre-K - K)

While some students may think worms are ‘icky,’ this fun video shows the important work that worms do to help decompose plants and food.  The digital lesson also shows ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Choose a variety of materials and let your students decide which can be reused or recycled. Creative ideas are encouraged for reuse!

Bringing Global Climate Change to the Classroom (Grades 6 - 12)

In this blog post, Earth Science Teacher Sebastian Byers explains how making climate change relatable to middle and high school students begins on the first day of class and continues all year long. Learn how he applies his 3R’s of relevance, relationships, and rigor to lessons, and read about a hands-on climate change understanding activity that hit the mark with his students. Then scroll to our additional resources below for dozens more ideas!
