This cold and snowy weather makes this a perfect time to put your feet up and listen to some wonderful stories about winter.

The wintery tale "The Tomten", written by Astrid Lindgren and based on a poem written by Viktor Rydberg, was shared with us by past MnSTA Executive Secretary Ed Hessler.

You also may be interested in another Astrid Lindgren story, "The Tomten and the Fox".

Here are two read-aloud versions of "The Tomten", a shorter (7:11) and a longer (13:59) version.

Here are two podcasts from KAXE radio in Grand Rapids, MN.

The first is a Phenology Report by John Latimer. This week "John covers how birches, pines, firs, and spruces use different tactics to survive these difficult winter conditions. He also discusses the structure of birch seeds and reports on the Christmas Bird Count!"

The second podcast from KAXE is by Duluth's birder extraordinaire, Laura Erickson. "Laura Erickson teaches us about chickadees! We get information on their cold-resistant lungs, how they survive bone-chilling overnight temperatures, and the song they sing in January that signals the beginning of the end of winter."
