We are excited to announce the publication of Greenhouse Effect HTML5, redesigned with new representations and measurement tools to deepen students learning!

Adjust the greenhouse gas concentration of the atmosphere and observe the effects on infrared radiation and surface temperature. Measure the energy flux throughout the atmosphere. Explore the atmosphere at different time periods or build a model atmosphere with infrared absorbing layers.

The HTML5 version includes many new features such as a wave representation of radiation, tools to measure radiative balance, and more options when modeling the atmosphere as infrared absorbing layers. Pair this simulation with Molecules and Light to build a microscopic model of the greenhouse effect.

Sample Learning Goals

  • Describe the effect of greenhouse gases on infrared radiation, sunlight, and surface temperature.
  • Explain why greenhouse gases affect the temperature.
  • Describe radiative balance and use it to explain the relationship between the surface temperature and greenhouse gas concentration.
  • Compare the effect of greenhouse gases to the effect of infrared absorbing layers.
