Job Description / Duties

Overview:
Minnesota Sea Grant, a systemwide program at the University of Minnesota, seeks a Temporary Maritime Education Specialist to participate in an exciting Center for Great Lakes Literacy project.

The Temporary Education Specialist will be responsible for developing three weeks of lessons and activities for a “Great Lakes Shipping 101” unit.
The lessons must meet Next Generation Science Standards, should be geared toward a middle school audience, and include suggestions for adapting the lesson to a younger or older audience.
Each lesson should include, but may not be limited to, a pretest, a teaching segment with facts and background material, activities or “hands-on” education component where learners apply what they have learned, and a post-test and reflection exercise.
The Education Specialist will be responsible for creative development of hands-on activities and/or classroom tools that are engaging and meaningful to students.
The curriculum will become part of Minnesota Sea Grant’s Great Lakes Maritime Transportation Education Program and will be made publicly available on the Center for Great Lakes Literacy website.

Start date: June 26, 2023

End date: August 31, 2023

Total hours: 240, part-time and temporary

Rate of pay: $35 per hour

Location: Duluth preferred but other locations in MN will be considered

Duties for this position include:
Develop lessons, activities, and related instructional materials aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (60%).
Develop learning assessment tools (25%).
Address unit feedback and concerns stemming from content review (15%).

Qualifications / Required Skills

Required qualification for this position include:
Bachelor’s degree with at least five years of relevant post degree experience
Experience teaching or working with K - 12 youth
Experience and ability in developing engaging curriculum and/or lesson plans in a K - 12 education setting
Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards
Core knowledge of science, mathematics, engineering, or related fields
Strong written communication skills
Able to be organized, detail oriented, focused, independent, and reliable
Able to meet deadlines while working independently
Familiarity with Google Workspace
