The Workshop on the Water will provide educators with a great opportunity to learn more about Lake Superior and the freshwater coastal environment in the estuary.

Workshop participants will be able to talk with a local scientist and learn about current Great Lakes research. Educator activity kits and monitoring equipment will be demonstrated during the workshop that are available for free loan through the Sea Grant network. The workshop will also highlight the new maritime education program and the new Coast Model of the Watershed Game.

Additional Workshop Information:

 

WHAT is the Educator Workshop on the Water?  This workshop will provide educators with new knowledge about the Great Lakes and new tools to use with upper elementary, middle school, and high school students to teach them about Great Lakes maritime and watershed health concepts.

WHO should attend?  4th through 12th grade teachers, and non-formal educator.

WHERE will the workshop be held?  The workshop will be held on the Vista Queen boat which will launch and return at 323 Harbor Drive, Duluth, MN 55802.

WHY attend?  Workshop participants will have an opportunity to talk with and learn about Great Lakes research from a local scientist and will learn about new curriculum and educator resources on maritime transport and local watershed engagement activities that are available through Minnesota Sea Grant, including the Watershed Game. Participants will also have the opportunity to borrow any of the activity kits and/or monitoring equipment that are demonstrated during the event.

The workshop will address:

  • The Great Lakes maritime transportation system

  • Watershed and stormwater management concepts

  • How land-use choices impact water quality in the Great Lakes

  • Education materials, activity kits, and monitoring equipment available for loan

  • The new Coast Model of the Watershed Game

WHAT else should I know?  

  • FOOD: Lunch and refreshments will be provided at the workshop.

  • TRAVEL STIPENDS: Stipends are available to help cover travel costs for educators that need it to make attendance at the workshop feasible (up to $150 to help cover mileage costs only, and up to $300 for those that will need help covering both overnight accommodations and mileage costs).

  • FREE GAME: A free copy of the Watershed Game will be provided to participants that are willing to participate in feedback surveys (while supplies last).
