by , posted on 1:12 PM, August 16, 2023
This two-day workshop will focus on defining and assessing socio-scientific issues for individuals and connecting them to their community, their country, and the world. This professional development opportunity will address the student experience of understanding how local challenges can evolve and connect to global challenges—we aim to give students access to resources and artifacts that illustrate these challenges including everyday objects that can be broken down scientifically and understood in a multitude of perspectives.

About this workshop:

This two-day workshop will focus on defining and assessing socio-scientific issues for individuals and connecting them to their community, their country, and the world. This professional development opportunity will address the student experience of understanding how local challenges can evolve and connect to global challenges—we aim to give students access to resources and artifacts that illustrate these challenges including everyday objects that can be broken down scientifically and understood in a multitude of perspectives.

Participants can expect to:

  1. Define and engage in conversations about socio-scientific issues (SSI).
  2. Discuss how to support learners to design solutions to problems in their community using a scientific approach.
  3. Apply SSI methodology to understand how students can make local and global connections with one artifact.
  4. Collaborate and strategize with their peers to create plans on how to integrate SSI methodology into their own classrooms, schools, and districts.

The event will be hosted via Zoom on the following days:

  • October 20th, 1:00pm-6:00pm EST
  • October 21st, 10:00am-3:00pm EST

Again, you can register for the event here. For any questions or inquiries, contact Addy Allred (allreda@si.edu).
