Apply for the Green Ribbon Schools Award

Each year, the Green Ribbon Schools Award from the U.S. Department of Education honors schools, districts, and higher education institutions that save energy and reduce operating costs, create environmentally friendly learning spaces, promote student health, and incorporate environmental sustainability into the curriculum.

A message from Angela Kolonich, MDE State Science Specialist:

Greetings,

I am writing to announce the opening of the Green Ribbon Schools Application cycle for 2023-2024. Each year, the Green Ribbon Schools Award from the U.S. Department of Education honors schools, districts, and higher education institutions that save energy and reduce operating costs, create environmentally friendly learning spaces, promote student health, and incorporate environmental sustainability into the curriculum. You can learn more about the program at the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Page, and view past honorees at the Green Strides Website

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) In cooperation with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education (OHE) nominates candidates to the U.S. Department of Education based on an application process. This year, completed applications (attached) will be due by January 5th 2024. The minimum requirements to be nominated for the federal Green Ribbon Schools award include documented progress in the Three Pillars of the Green Ribbon Schools Award, including 1. Reduced Environmental Impacts and Costs, 2. Improved Health and Wellness, and 3. Effective Environmental and Sustainability Education.  Please visit the MDE Green Ribbon Schools Webpage for more information and resources to support your application.
