A new Understand Native Minnesota program will award mini-grants to support K-12 educators as they teach students in schools across Minnesota about Native American culture, history and modern tribal governments. The program, administered by the Minneapolis Foundation, has $500,000 available for small grants in 2024, with awards of up to $2,000 per teacher.
Established and funded by the SMSC’s Understand Native Minnesota campaign, this mini-grant program aims to improve the teaching of Native history and culture by supporting educators who are pursuing training or classroom projects to share accurate narratives and build understanding of the contributions and experiences of Native peoples in Minnesota.
The mini-grants can be used for classroom resources, materials and projects, professional development, or curriculum and resource development. Educators in Minnesota K-12 public, charter, tribal and private schools are all eligible to apply for funding.
Grant applications will be accepted through January 22, 2024. A virtual information session will be held from 3-4 p.m. on Thursday, January 11.
