Dear Physics Educator,

The American Physical Society (APS) is holding its largest meeting, the March Meeting, at the Minneapolis Convention Center from March 2 through 8, 2024. This meeting gathers more than ten thousand physicists worldwide to share their research and collaborate.

The Forum on Outreach and Engaging the Public (FOEP) and APS are inviting Minneapolis-area high schools to try out LabEscape – a unique escape room carefully designed by Dr. Paul Kwiat, a leading quantum physicist, to engage participants with physics phenomena to solve the pending crisis at hand - helping Professor Schrödenberg use newly developed quantum technology to find a cure against a horrible new virus! Participants work together in teams of 4-8 and learn how physics is relevant in their daily lives. No prior science knowledge is assumed – the winning time to complete a previous mission was achieved by a French teacher and his family! After finishing the escape room, Dr. Kwiat and his team explained the physics behind the phenomena.

An article about LabEscape was published in the February 2017 issue of Scientific American: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/ldquo-escape-room-rdquo-game-challenges-physics-phobes-to-face-their-fear/, and you can learn more about LabEscape at: https://labescape.org/

Since only eight students may escape for the lab at a time, if you have a large group of students, those not participating in LabEscape may visit the March Meeting Exhibit Hall (if it’s open then) and attend talks (Monday – Friday). Please note APS will not charge high schools for participating in these events.

Space is limited. To sign your group up for a visit, contact: Paul Kwiat, kwiat@illinois.edu

You can register today at LabEscape.org/APS-HS.

We look forward to engaging you and your students with physics!

Sincerely,

Taviare Hawkins
