A Birthday

by Ed Hessler, posted on 6:15 PM, August 26, 2017

Ninety-nine remarkable years!

Today, August 26 2017, is Katherine Johnson's birthday. She played a key role in assuring the success of the Apollo 11 mission, among making other stunning calculations and achievements. Along the way she shattered one stereotype after another.

A year ago Vanity Fair published a short article about her by Charles Bolden, former NASA administrator and NASA astronaut.  It is a polished gem.

Happy Birthday Ms. Johnson.

If you've not read Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly, I think it is not to be missed. I know that there is a movie but even if you've seen it I don't think the book will disappoint you but add to learning more about her and her colleagues. I'm a book guy.
