Job Description / Duties

The Bell Museum is hiring a Grand Rapids Education Associate. The Education Associate creates a safe, engaging, age-appropriate, and positive learning environment for campers while working with other summer camp and Research and Outreach Center (ROC) staff. This position is responsible for providing first aid, knowledge of emergency procedures, and general safety for campers. Additionally, this position will be assisting with co-facilitating educational experiences centered on environmental science, natural history, and agriculture for children entering 2nd - 6th grade. Bell statewide camps are a collaborative effort between the Bell Museum and select ROC.

This position is based in Grand Rapids, MN. In addition to camp hours at our primary location at NCROC in Grand Rapids, there may be opportunities to work additional hours assisting with agricultural research on the NCROC campus and to travel to Crookston, MN and Lamberton, MN for 1 - 3 days of additional camp hours.

Duties and Responsibilities

Camp Facilitation and Instruction (65%)

Lead camp safety protocols and first aid.
Fill in for Lead Educator roles as needed, including but not limited to implementing engaging camp activities for up to 25 children per class using a provided curriculum that includes scientific experiments and interactive activities involving earth science, agriculture, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, art, games, and more.
Assist and work collaboratively with camp and ROC staff in creating a safe, fun and enriching camp environment. Manage campers, group dynamics, and behaviors.
Lead and assist in facilitating activities indoors and outdoors.
Camp staff are required to follow all safety related guidelines, policies, and procedures at all times and ensure that campers are safe at all times.
Interact with campers, guardians, other staff, and the general public in a safe, respectful, and professional manner.


Camp Prep and Administrative Tasks (20%)

Participate in regular check-ins with camp staff.
Learn and enforce first aid and safety protocols.
Assist with setup and clean up of camp activities.
Travel to the Bell Museum in Saint Paul for training (paid travel and training hours, plus mileage, accommodations, and per diem covered by the Bell Museum)

Agricultural Research & Other duties as assigned (15%)

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications
Essential Qualifications

Experience working with youth and adults in a team environment.
Must be dedicated, dependable, flexible, and enthusiastic about working with youth.
Experience or relevant coursework in youth education, physical or natural science, or agriculture.
Experience working with persons from diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Desired Qualifications

Training or experience working in camps as a summer camp leader.
Demonstrated understanding of basic science concepts, including agricultural, and natural sciences.
Experience in working with youth with cognitive, physical or other disabilities or diagnoses.
CPR and First Aid training and/or certification.

Additional Information

Hours, Pay, Other

Position start date: May 28, 2024
Position end date: August 16th, 2024
Can work up to 5 days per week as a temp/casual employee not to exceed 67 total days. Excludes University holidays.
Required camp training May 28th - 30th & June 3 - 7 in Grand Rapids with one training day in St Paul (travel will be compensated)
Pay rate: $20.00/hr
Other: Successfully passing a background check is a requirement for this position.
