Job Description / Duties

The Bell Museum is hiring a Grand Rapids Lead Educator & Coordinator. The Lead Educator and Coordinator is responsible for creating and facilitating educational experiences centered on environmental science, natural history, and agriculture for children entering 2nd - 6th grade during the Bell Museum’s statewide summer camps. This position creates a safe, engaging, age-appropriate and positive learning environment for campers while working with and being a camp team leader for summer camp and ROC staff. Statewide camps are a collaborative effort between the Bell Museum and select University of Minnesota Research and Outreach Centers.

Duties and Responsibilities

Camp Facilitation and Instruction (80%)

Follow safety guidelines and practices to ensure that campers are safe at all times with on-going supervision.
Develop a personal teaching style to accommodate camper learning style(s).
Manage campers, group dynamics, and behaviors
Provide direction to and work collaboratively with camp and ROC staff.
Interact with campers, guardians, other staff, and the general public in a safe, respectful, and professional manner.
Camp Prep and Administrative Tasks (20%)

Co-facilitate and prepare camp staff training
Prepare supplies for camp and community outreach activities
Assist in onboarding and managing camp staff
Coordinate programs and staff for community outreach activities and camp advertisement
Regular virtual and in-person check-ins with Statewide Education Programs Manager and camp and ROC staff
Learn, help create, and enforce first aid and safety protocols.
Conduct reflections/evaluations of the program and experiences.
Travel to the Bell Museum in Saint Paul for training (paid travel and training hours, plus mileage, accommodations, and per diem covered by Bell Museum)

Qualifications / Required Skills

Essential Qualifications

A minimum of two years experience leading children in a formal or informal educational setting.
Experience leading a team.
Must be dedicated, dependable, flexible, and enthusiastic about working with youth.
Demonstrated understanding of basic science concepts, including agricultural and natural sciences.
Experience working with persons from diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Desired Qualifications

● Training or experience working in camps as a summer camp leader.

● Previous teaching experience and/or possessing a teaching license.

● Experience managing a team in a fast paced work environment.

● Experience working with youth with cognitive, physical or other disabilities or diagnoses.

● CPR and First Aid training and/or certification.

Additional Information

Hours, Pay, Other

Position start date: May 10, 2024
Position end date: August 16th, 2024
Can work up to 5 days per week as a temp/casual employee not to exceed 67 total days. Excludes University holidays.
Required camp training May 28th - 30th & June 3 - 7 in Grand Rapids with one training day in St Paul (travel will be compensated)
Pay rate: $22.20/hr
Other: Successfully passing a background check is a requirement for this position.
